Rosen Teen Health and Wellness

  • iFactory designed, programmed and deployed a publishing platform that allowed Rosen's non-technical editorial staff to deliver credible, up-to-date, problem-solving information from the Rosen library to teenage students. By building the editorial management system first, Rosen's editorial staff could begin authoring and editing content while the rest of the site was designed and built. TeenHealthandWellness.com (the first online database Rosen ever published) launched in January 2007 to overwhelming acclaim from librarians and teachers, and Rosen plans to use it as a model for future websites.

Behind the scenes: Content, Editorial and Account Management Systems

Rosen can control access to their content through iFactory's Account Management System which allows management of personal and institutional subscriptions and can authenticate users by IP, username and password and referring URL. By integrating the Account Management System with our Custom Content Management System, Rosen Publishing is able to easily offer customized versions of the Teen Health and Wellness site to their subscribers, all served from the same source material. In addition, Rosen's non-technical staff can easily create new polls and quizzes to keep the homepage fresh and compelling.

SAGE Reference Online

  • iFactory built a new online publishing platform to allow SAGE's editorial staff to upload their encyclopedia's content into the system, add metadata to the articles, and control how the encyclopedias are released to the live site. Users can search through 80 different encyclopedias or browse each one through their Reader's Guide. A customizable CSS-based design allows each online encyclopedia to reflect the colors and design of the print versions that users are familiar with. SAGE plans to use their new web-based system for all of their encyclopedias moving forward.

Oxford African American Studies Center

  • The AASC allows Oxford University Press to combine the authority of carefully edited reference works with sophisticated custom-built technology. iFactory developed an information architecture for the AASC, designed its color scheme and layout, and built an online publishing platform that displays a wide variety of content, including articles, images, tables, graphs, maps and timelines.

Behind the scenes: Oxford Publishing Platform

In order for Oxford University Press to manage the massive amount of content on their websites, iFactory built a completely new Oxford Publication Platform which provides an infrastructure for online reference sites. The "OPP" includes an XML-based content repository, search query and search form tools, and a modular API from which these sites can be built. This revolutionary approach to publishing ensures that every Oxford website maintains OUP's reputation for quality and accuracy while improving the efficiency of OUP's editorial and publishing process. The platform will greatly reduce the cost and time of creating new websites, and OUP plans to use this platform to develop all of their new sites in 2007.

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

  • The arrival of the online Dictionary of National Biography allows Oxford University Press to extend the 60 volume print version of the DNB with up-to-date content, dynamic citation information, revision history for every article, free biographies, interactive holiday features, daily RSS feeds and podcasts. Users can search or browse through all 63 million words in DNB thanks to a powerful search framework built by iFactory. Users can quickly and easily refine their search by dates, place or genre, or browse over 55,000 biographies by alphabetical listing, date or theme.

Behind the scenes: Publication Information Management and Account Management Systems

Leveraging Oxford's internal content management tools that manage the editorial process, iFactory deployed a publication management system that allows OUP's non-technical staff to manage the publication process between the content management system and the live site. iFactory also built and maintains an Account Management System that is used to handle and maintain all online subscriptions outside the UK for all of OUP's online reference works, and is integrated with OUP's SAP financial system and their internal UK subscription system.

RR Donnelley PubSelectSM

  • iFactory worked with RR Donnelley to develop PubSelectSM, the next generation custom publishing application. Users can build their book by selecting and rearranging individual chapter content from publishers' textbooks, customize the cover and title page and even upload their own content. Once the book is finalized, a PDF of the final book is sent to RR Donnelley and printed. iFactory also built an administrative system so that publishers can control content, access and pricing of their content.

O'Reilly SafariU

  • iFactory worked jointly with O'Reilly to develop the new SafariU site. iFactory developed the front end code allowing users to search, manage and upload content for Custom Books/Print on Demand. The AJAX-based drag-and-drop interface improves usability by allowing users to sort their custom book chapters in a natural fluid manner. The front end seamlessly communicates user requests to the underlying MarkLogic platform implemented by O'Reilly.
