Aby (short for Abena) Kumi joins us from Rising Tide Interactive, where she created 50+ high-performing digital ads monthly for political campaigns. Before that, she ran her own freelance practice for 5+ years, delivering 150+ brand identities and design projects. She’s a George Mason University Honors College grad with a B.F.A. in Graphic Design.
We sat down with Aby to learn more about what makes her tick:
Why did you choose iFactory?
When I came across iFactory, I was really inspired by the amount of intentionality that went into the work they were producing. Particularly, The Braille Institute website stood out to me as an incredibly thoughtfully designed piece, and I wanted to be part of a team making things like that.
What do you love most about design?
It’s great to get to be creative as a job. I take a lot of pride and joy in creating things for others, and this position gives me the opportunity to do that as much as possible. It’s also extremely satisfying to hit the nail on the head with projects. I don’t think there’s a better feeling than knowing you’ve successfully communicated an idea or concept visually.
Most rewarding project you've worked on?
I got to design a series of ads for the Legal Defense Fund’s Defending Democracy initiative, which helped to raise a significant amount for the organization. They were very pleased with the designs and made some of them into t-shirts!
What is your favorite food?
Pizza, hands down. You literally cannot go wrong with a pepperoni and sausage slice. Other than that I love Ghanaian food and K-BBQ!
Who’s your idol? Why?
My idol is Beyoncé. She’s someone I’ve looked up to for a long time as a businesswoman, a performer, and a person. I admire people who are truly passionate about their craft and I think she exemplifies that tenfold.
What’s your favorite place you’ve visited?
I went to Korea in 2024 and had an amazing time! It’s such a beautiful country.
Cat person or dog person? Why?
Dog person for sure. I’m biased as I’ve always had dogs, but I love their loyalty and how friendly they are. I know my dogs feel like extended family members.
Favorite karaoke song?
It’s All Coming Back to Me Now by Celine Dion! I love a good power ballad. Either that or anything from musical theatre.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I would love to be able to teleport. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do but it’s so easy to get bogged down in the logistics of planning it.
What are some of your hobbies/passions outside of work?
Acting, dancing, sewing, cooking, and travel are my most prominent ones. I’m also super passionate about film, TV, comedy, and live music/ performances.
