Prospective students are asking AI those questions right now, in conversations. If you are not in the response, you may not in the consideration set.
The team at iFactory has spent the past year auditing how AI search engines find, understand, and recommend colleges and universities. The pattern is consistent: institutions with strong traditional rankings are still sometimes not very visible in AI answers, and the schools that are being cited are not always the ones with the biggest brands. What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is the degree to which AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude can discover your institution’s content, understand what your institution is and does, and cite or recommend it in their answers to prospective students, parents, and other audiences.
The discipline of improving it is called generative engine optimization (GEO); you will also see answer engine optimization (AEO) used interchangable. Where traditional SEO earns you a search ranking, GEO earns you a citation.

How do prospective students actually use AI search?
They use it to learn more on their own terms. They research what it is REALLY like to be a student there, do some comparison shopping, try to get a sense of costs.
- Research from Education Dynamics found that nearly 70% of modern learners use AI tools like ChatGPT in their college research process.
- Bain reports that about 80% of consumers now rely on zero-click results for at least some of their searches; the answer is consumed without ever visiting a website.
- SparkToro’s analysis of Datos clickstream data found that 58.5% of US Google searches already end without a click, and AI Overviews push that number higher.
- Meanwhile, Search Influence found that 51% of universities lack an established SEO plan, which means the AI-visibility gap is starting from an even thinner foundation.
A growing share of the college search now happens inside an AI answer, not on your site. The prospective student who asks Perplexity to “compare affordable online MBA programs with AACSB accreditation” gets a synthesized shortlist with citations. A language model chose the institutions on that shortlist based on what it could find, extract, and corroborate about them.

How to test your university's AI visibility: a five-prompt DIY test
You can get started testing your AI search visibility right now. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google (for AI Overviews), and run five prompts a real prospective student would ask:
- The category prompt: “What are the best [your strongest program] programs in [your region]?” Are you named? Who is?
- The comparison prompt: “Compare [your institution] and [your top cross-app rival] for [program].” Is the information about you accurate and current?
- The constraint prompt: “I’m a working adult looking for [program] under $[realistic tuition]. What should I consider?” Do your actual differentiators surface?
- The factual prompt: “What is the tuition for [your program] at [your institution]?” Does the AI answer correctly, hedge, or hallucinate?
- The trust prompt: “Is [your institution] respected for [field]? What do people say?” What third-party sources is the answer drawing on?
Run each prompt more than once, because AI answers are generative, so they vary. Score yourself on three things: presence (were you mentioned?), accuracy (was what it said true?), and sourcing (was it citing your site, a third party, or nothing at all?).
This will give you a good baseline. From here, you can create a roadmap to increase your institution’s visibility.
Why do AI engines cite some universities and not others?
AI search engines are not mysterious. They cite content they can retrieve, extract, and trust. In our audit work, the institutions that consistently show up in AI answers have the following quailties:
Their answers are extractable
Language models cite content they can lift cleanly. If the answer to “what is the tuition for your online MBA?” lives in a clean paragraph or a simple table, you are citable. If it lives in a PDF, an image, a tabbed calculator widget, in javascript or a paragraph of brand prose that sounds amazing but does not directly states the number, you are not. Every high-intent page needs a direct, plain-language answers to the appropriate high-value questions high on the page.
The institution is a well-defined entity
AI systems reason about things, not just keywords: institutions, programs, credentials, locations, and the relationships between them. If your program names are inconsistent across your site (or across the internet), your schema markup is thin, and your organizational identity is fuzzy, the model’s understanding of you is fuzzy too. Third parties corroborate their story
Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands and found that branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, while backlinks correlate at just 0.218. AI engines trust what other credible sources say about you (rankings coverage, trade press, association directories, Reddit threads, news mentions) roughly three times more than they weight the classic link signals. AI visibility is built on a holistically strong internet presence (your website + the rest of the web) .
Their technical foundations don't block the crawlers
AI crawlers are less forgiving than Googlebot. Client-side rendering that hides content, robots.txt rules that block AI user agents, slow pages, and missing schema all could remove you from the retrieval pool. Their content is fresh and dated
Answer engines love sources they can date. Pages with visible publish and update dates, current-year tuition figures, and this-cycle deadlines outperform undated evergreen pages that were last touched three redesigns ago.

For most higher ed marketing teams, the practical question is not “should we care about AI search?” It is “given limited time and budget, what should we do first?” The diagnostic order we use:
- If you have never tested, test. Run the five-prompt exercise above this week. It takes less than an hour.
- If your SEO foundations are broken, fix them first. Crawlability, site speed, information architecture, and clean program pages feed both Google and the answer engines.
- If your SEO is solid but your AI visibility is unknown, audit it. A structured audit measures presence, accuracy, and sourcing across the major AI engines for your priority programs.
- If you are visible but misrepresented, fix your extractable facts. Tuition, outcomes, accreditation, and deadlines need to exist as clean, current, structured statements on pages AI systems can reach.
- If your facts are clean, build corroboration. Earn the third-party mentions (trade coverage, directories, community presence, Reddit, You Tube, Wikipedia) that answer engines treat as trust.
